It's been a tough week. Not because it was Thanksgiving ... that was actually the best day of the week. Aside from that, I've been feeling really apathetic. Sometimes, when you're waiting and waiting and waiting for that desired result and it's STILL not here, it can become hard to care anymore. It becomes next to impossible to focus, to keep your eye on the prize and not get all bummed out, impatient and negative.
But then this morning, as I was making myself get out of my Monday-morning bed, the phrase "You're a fixer-upper" popped into my head. Oddly enough, that idea made me feel a lot better.
Imagine you just bought a beat-up old house with lots of incredible potential. Just walking through the rooms, you can see how really spectacular this place can be with a little TLC. When you tell your friends about it, or when you think about its existence, do you call it a POS? Or do you talk about its possibilities? Do you dread taking care of it or downright ignore what it needs, or are you excited and ecstatic and can't wait to get over there to work on it some more?
Let's say this house has a really cool space that you can't wait to turn into your reading room. There's a place for a very comfy couch, with a skylight overhead and lots of bookshelves. You can totally envision where you're going to hang plants, and maybe add a fountain or two. In fact, you might even build a few speakers into the wall so you can pipe relaxing music in. It's going to be your room, and you can decorate it anyway you want. This is where you can't wait to focus all of your attention.
And then, there's another place where you're going to put the hot tub. You've already got a crystal clear picture of what that room is going to look like when it's done!
But wait. The house needs some work on the foundation, first. What a snooze-fest.
What fun can there possibly be in having contractors doing whatever it is they do, using up your time, energy and money, fixing something as boring as the foundation? There's your reading room just itching to fixed up! And what about that hot tub?
I guess sometimes you just have to wait for the really exciting stuff, while the important, stability stuff is laid into place. Sure, it's not as fun, but it's a lot more necessary, if you want that reading room to stay put once its there.
In the meantime, I can go ahead and pick out the fabric and the wallpaper, eh? I can do a little bit of planning for the makeover I intend to do once this foundation is taken care of.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is, don't get discouraged if your shape shifting efforts are taking longer than you thought they would. Remember that as long as you stay on track, you WILL eventually see results. You'll see results one way or the other, the question is what are the results going to be demonstrating ... the fact that you kept your eye on that prize and now have a showplace to live in, or that you allowed yourself to get discouraged and settled for a house with a shaky foundation?
I hope everyone had a great holiday! Now let's get back to work!
